Description: White or almost white crystalline powder, odorless.
Solubility: Very slightly soluble in water, freely soluble in ethanol (96 per cent).
Melting Point: 20C to 204C
Appearance of Solution: The solution is clear and not more intensely colored than reference solution.
Gallic Acid: Maximum. 0.50%
Sulphate: Maximum 0.12%
Zinc: Maximum 25 ppm
Heavy Metals: Maximum 10 ppm
Sulphated Ash: Maximum 0.1%
Loss on Drying at 105C: Maximum 0.5%
Assay: Minimum 99.00%.

Action and Use: Antioxidant.
Ethyl Gallate is ethyl 3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoate.
A white to creamy white, crystalline powder.
Slightly soluble in water; freely soluble in ethanol (96%) and in ether; practically insoluble in arachis oil.
A. Light absorption.
B. Gas chromatography.
C. Dissolve 5 mg in a mixture of 25 ml of acetone and 25 ml of water and add 0.05 ml of iron(III) chloride solution. A purplish black colour is produced which rapidly becomes bluish black.
Melting point: 151C to 154V.
Acidity: Dissolve 0.4 g in 100 ml of warm carbon dioxide-free water , cool and titrate with 0.1M sodium hydroxide using bromocresol green solution as indicator. Not more than 0.1 ml of 0.1M sodium hydroxide is required.
Chloride: 330 ppm.
Loss on drying: When dried to constant weight at 105C, loses not more than 1.0% of its weight. Use 1 g.
Sulphated ash: Not more than 0.1%.
Ethyl gallate is an antioxidant added to food and it has an E number E313.
Octyl Gallate BP Grade
C15H22O5 --- 282.3 --- CAS 1034-01-1
Content: 97.0 per cent to 103.0 per cent (dried substance).
Appearance: White or almost white, crystalline powder.
Solubility: Practically insoluble in water, freely soluble in ethanol (96 per cent), practically insoluble in methylene chloride.
A. Melting point.
Determine the melting point of the substance to be examined. Mix equal parts of the substance to be examined and octyl gallate CRS and determine the melting point of the mixture. The difference between the melting points (which are about 101C) is not greater than 2C.
B. Examine the chromatograms obtained in the test for impurity A.
Results: The principal spot in the chromatogram obtained with test solution (b) is similar in position, colour and size to the principal spot in the chromatogram obtained with reference solution (a).
Impurity A: Thin-layer chromatography
Chlorides: Maximum 100 ppm.
Heavy metals: Maximum 10 ppm.
Loss on drying: Maximum 0.5 per cent, determined on 1.000 g by drying in an oven at 70C.
Sulphated ash: Maximum 0.1 per cent, determined on 1.0 g.
Dissolve 0.100 g in methanol and dilute to 250.0 ml with the same solvent. Dilute 5.0 ml of the solution to 200.0 ml with methanol. Measure the absorbance at the absorption maximum at 275 nm.
Calculate the content of C15H22O5 taking the specific absorbance to be 387.
Ethyl gallate is an antioxidant added to food and it has an E number E311.
